Mourning Flight

Mourning Doves, 30" x 16" Oil on Canvas

The dove season opener is a national holiday in the south.

Each Labor Day weekend, tens of thousands of men, women and children take to the dove field carrying camo buckets and boxes of shells. We shoot, sweat, laugh and curse in our attempt to knock down these beautiful, fast-flying migratory game birds we call mourning doves. The dove season opener is a national holiday in the south, and each year we share in the tradition. After a recent hunt I decided to paint a group of doves in their infamous erratic, dipping-and-diving flight style as they enter a field. You can almost see them daring you to take a shot. And, of course, we always do.
