Chocolate Lab, 16" x 20" Oil on Canvas
In this painting I really wanted to portray the intensity and the strong desire of this lab. I changed up the color of my underpainting to a mix of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, which cooled off the color temperature of the finished piece. The cold, heavy, overcast atmosphere around him adds intensity to the mood and by shifting him to the side of the composition, I hope to lock the viewer's eye into his clear, focused stare.
This painting was a lot of fun to create, and I painted him during an unseasonably cold January in North Carolina. It was really cold, and it always adds so much more to the experience of painting for me when the actual weather matches that of the painting I'm working on. Just like painting a strutter on a warm spring day or working on a rutting whitetail in early November.
I created another video to share the creative process. I hope you enjoy the video and be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to stay current on future videos.
