Ringneck Refuge

Pheasant, 24" x 16" Oil on Canvas

When working on ringnecks, I like to paint their heads in pure, bold colors with firm edges and then loosen up the brushwork in the background.

This trio of pheasants is set against the background of a loosely painted, colorful midwestern fencerow. When working on ringnecks, I like to paint their heads in pure, bold colors with firm edges and then loosen up the brushwork in the background. It gives the painting a strong focal point and the expression on their faces is a natural center of interest. Most of the foreground is painted in bold strokes of solid color laid onto the canvas with a palette knife.

Be sure to check out the video detailing the painting in progress. I hope you enjoy the video and be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to stay current on future videos.
